There are many people who do not know exactly who HAVIN is, only that we sponsor the annual Insight Expo. At the top of this blog, there is a page element titled “Menu.” If you enter on that, there will be two links that appear, “Home” and “About.” If you enter on the “About” link, it will take you to the history of HAVIN, giving the background on our founding and past events. There, you will also find out more about the various volunteer support groups that comprise HAVIN.
Every member who serves on the HAVIN planning committee is a volunteer and committed to serving the Houston visually impaired community. We are dedicated to our mission to “bring unity to our community,” and plan to be here for a long time to come. We have recently taken steps to communicate that message clearly. A few months ago, the state of Texas recognized the Houston Area Visually Impaired Network as a nonprofit organization, and we are also in the process of applying with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to become a 501(c)3 organization.
What does that mean for you? You will see no big changes on the surface. But, behind the scenes, we will be better able to find support and funding for greater programming opportunities in the future.
If you want to keep up with what we have going on, subscribe to this blog by email. There is an option at the bottom of this page that will let you easily do that.
Stay tuned because we’ll be updating on our status as it progresses, as well as sharing more details about this year’s upcoming Insight Expo!
